Northwinds Symphonic Band
Friday, May 17 - 8:00 PM

The Northwinds Symphonic Band opens the Arts Council's 2002 Summer MusicFest season with "Stars, Stripes and Sousa!" on Friday, May 17, 2002. In the reprise of its role as The John Philip Sousa Band, Northwinds will present an all new Sousa concert utilizing Sousa's eclectic mix of all styles of music. Northwinds Symphonic Band founder and conductor, Ronald J. Evans says of Sousa, "he did more to eliminate "musical snobbery" than any other conductor of his time and that his penchant for patriotism earned him the title of 'Salesman of Americanism.'" Evans will also don his John Philip Sousa persona to conduct this entertaining outdoor concert at the Smithgall Arts Center in downtown Gainesville. Selections for the May 17th concert include Franz von Suppe's overture "The Poet and Peasant", Hebert L Clarke's cornet solo "The Bride of the Waves", Rossini's overture "William Tell", "Serenade" form Romberg's "Student Prince", and form "La Traviata" the soprano solo "Ah, fors' e lui". Featured soloists and guest artists include Dr. James Zingara playing the role of Hebert L. Clarke the famed cornetist with the Sousa Band. Making a guest appearance singing the music that made Mario Lanza a household name is Dr. Sandy Calloway, Tenor, and Chair of the Truett-McConnell College Music Department. Playing the role of another Sousa Band member is Ryan Bybee, Principal Trombonist with the University of Georgia Wind Symphony, portraying Mr. Author Pryor whom Sousa referred to as the "Paganini of the Trombone." And also returning to the Sousa Band persona is soprano Kelli E. Bolin recreating the role of the great Metropolitan Opera Star, Estelle Liebling, who sang with the Sousa band in over 1,000 concerts.

Another featured portion of the program will be a "Tribute to the Armed Forces" with a special arrangement by conductor Ronald Evans. Members of the Armed Forces will be on hand as we salute the service branches on the eve of Armed Forces Day. Retired History Professor, Heyward Gnann will narrate "America The Beautiful" during a special tribute to the United States.
